Let Us See! Cosplay Costume Fails?

These can’t be facepalms, can they? Maybe just for Wonder Woman, but isn’t that the point?

Many of the cosplayers put a lot of effort into their costumes. It reminds me of when I was a girl in the GATE (Gifted And Talented Education) Program while I was a 5th grade student at Robert Bruce Elementary School.

We had studied blue birds that year with Mrs. Gunn and our GATE Olympics team chose to represent blue jays.

We were all supposed to dress up as the birds so I wore blue sweat pants and a blue sweat shirt (one of which may have been picked up at a Good Will store), along with a mask and tail that I had made by hand with paper and crayons (or markers?).

All I did was stick the tail into my pants to be held up by the elastic. I used a string to keep the mask tied to my head. I remember being dropped off all by myself at another school… maybe on a Friday?

I showed up all nervous but excited and no one from my school’s team was there. Fortunately, two boys didn’t have a team either and so they set us up together – the great thing is that we quickly got along and worked well as a team, leading us to win first place.

I came back to school the next week with a plaque and expressed disappointment with my peers – why did they miss out? I don’t remember the excuses they gave.

I wish I still had the plaque to show my daughter. Maybe it’s lost in some junk boxes somewhere in California? I vaguely recall a newspaper article being published back then too but I guess I’d have to research the archives.
